When Becky Scott suggested the next prego* night out could be going to see a production of The Sound of Music in which we sing along to the words, quite frankly, we were all a little sheepish to step up. However, like good prego* employees we went along with this new revelation in entertainment.
As the appointed day loomed, there was talk in the office about the dressing up that was obligatory for the said event. “Oh, you’ll be the odd one out if you don’t dress up,” Becky cheerfully chimed. And so, the wheels were set in motion for the costume-collecting we were required to do.
When the much-anticipated 10th October finally arrived, there was much hilarity & frivolity come 4 pm when we were required to get ourselves dressed up and prepared for the evening ahead. As only expected of the prego* family – we went to town! (see photo!)
Mother Abbot and head of the Abbey – (of course) Mr. Steve Henry
Other equally fabulous nuns included – Berni, Mikey, Sally, Bex.
Captain von Trapp – Dirty Dave.
Von trapp children in sailor suits – Hannah, Rowan.
Lederhosen-clad family members – Jared, Kristen.
Maria in all her curtain-glory* – Becky.
We made our way into Leeds and across town to the City Varieties theatre leaving a wake of distressed shoppers and stunned business men and women in our trial. Sure enough, Becky Scott had not been telling porkies – as we sat in the bar next door to the theatre, Sound of Music clad enthusiasts started pouring in after us, which was indeed a welcoming sight!
The performance began with a lippy introduction by our Master of Ceremonies for the evening, which involved an intricate presentation of the appropriate sound effects we should be using throughout the film, followed by a costume competition. This involved certain categories of costumes to take to the stage to be judged by the audience. Kristen and Jared made us all proud by winning in their category. Hurrah.
The show was a huge success, we sang until we could sing no more, needless to say we were all horse the following day!
* thanks to Becky’s sister Jane for her unbelievable sewing skills to make hideous charity-shop curtains into a fully fledged Maria outfit.
